IRS unveiled average direct deposit amounts

In 2025, the average direct deposit refund amount is $2,252. Once more, this average payment is much smaller than the one for 2024. Bear in mind that it was $3,265 in 2024.

There is a considerable difference since it is 31% lower in 2025. The reasons why these average direct deposits are so low maybe these 2. One is that many Earned Income Tax Credit & Additional Child Tax Credit refunds have not been issued yet.

Remember that the IRS cannot pay them before mid-May and many will receive them by March 3, 2025- Another reason may be the fact that there have been fewer refunds received.

How many recipients have requested the IRS a direct deposit?

The total number of direct deposit tax refunds is 13,515,000 as of February 14, 2025. In 2024, it was 20,574,000. Therefore, it was more than 34 percent higher as of February 16, 2024.

Another interesting figure is the fact that taxpayers are using less and less the IRS website. Perhaps, the use of Direct File may have reduced the use of the online services.

During the 2025 tax season, a total of 33,040,000 were received as of February 14. This figure is also 4.9% lower than in 2024. The number os tax returns process by the IRS has also decreased.
