IRS online interview for amended tax returns

Do not worry because there are some mistakes that the IRS can easily correct and there will be no need to file an amended return. On the contrary, some errors cannot be corrected by the Agency.

Therefore, you will need to file an amended tax return. Simply take the online interview to see if you should file it again or not. For your information, this tool will only be for certain tax returns. Check them here: https://www.irs.gov/help/ita/should-i-file-an-amended-return.

Make sure you introduce accurate information because it could alter the results of this interview. Thus, as the IRS stated, conclusions are based on information given by you.

IRS interview duration

Luckily, the Internal Revenue Service interviews for taxpayers to check if they need to file an amended tax return will only take up to 5 minutes. If you are not sure whether you should file an amended return, hire a tax preparer.

Although this IRS online interview will only take up to 5 minutes, remember that after 30 minutes of not being active, you will have to start over again. Do not use the “Back” button within the ITA (Interactive Tax Assistant) tool. It could cause the application to fail.

Once you are ready, click on the button “Begin”. To find this tool use the link provided above. Then, click on CONTINUE. Select the tax year you would like to see if an amended return is necessary. Say if you have filed already or not, and if you have received a notice. Other questions may be related to filing status or:

  • Income
  • Deductions
  • Dependents
  • Credits
  • Tax liability or
  • Refund amount

Note: Go through the whole interview to get results from the IRS tool.
