The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) reminds taxpayers of an approaching deadline. If you can’t file your 2024 tax return on time, there is something you can do once you pay your taxes.

The IRS recommends getting an extension of time to file your 2024 tax return. Bear in mind that this must be done before the April tax filing due date, the Agency has set for the 2025 tax season.

When is the IRS deadline to get an extension in 2025?

The IRS will allow American taxpayers to get an extension of time before the April 15, 2025, deadline is over. Read that bit again because it is important and it will help you avoid penalties.

What the IRS allows taxpayers is to get an extension of time. Therefore, it implies that you cannot delay the payment of the taxes you owe the Agency. So, basically, you will be able to file your taxes later but you will have to pay your tax liability by April 15, 2025.

This extension will prevent you from getting a penalty if you file your 2024 tax return before the new October deadline is over. The deadline for those who qualified for an extension of time will be October 15, 2025.

IRS offers 3 ways to get an extension in 2025

It will depend on the taxpayer’s preference whether they want to choose one method or another one. Here are the 3 possibilities:

  • pay online and select the box
  • Use Internal Revenue Service Free File
  • Request an extension by mail

Many people find helpful the “pay online” method because they can pay and check the box to let the Agency know this payment is to get an extension of time. In this way, they will not forget about the payment of the tax they owe.

This method will also allow taxpayers to get a time extension without having to file a separate extension form. Check you receive a confirmation number of your extension for your records.

Many others prefer the IRS Free File to request an automatic tax-filing extension electronically (no income limit for extensions). For the mail option visit: https://www.irs.gov/filing/get-an-extension-to-file-your-tax-return.
