The 2025 Tax Season is coming to an end for millions of American taxpayers who have filed their tax returns, but how much is the IRS paying?

The IRS has confirmed the average tax refunds as of March 21, 2025. These figures have been compared to the one in the previous year. The exact date was March 22, 2024.

In this way, taxpayers can see how much have 2025 tax refunds changed if compared to the amounts in the previous year. For your information, the IRS has confirmed that 79,616,000 had been received by March 21, 2025. That is about 1.1% less than in 2024.

IRS updated average direct deposits

As of March 21, 2025, the average direct deposit refund amount is $3,284. This average amount has a tendency to decrease as the 2025 Tax Season unfolds. As of March 14, 2025, it was $3,330.

Thus, the new average direct deposit amount is slightly smaller. The average direct deposit amount as of March 22, 2024, was $3,152. Hence, it is good news for Americans taxpayers who are receiving more money so far.

In fact, the IRS has refunded the total amount of $176.591 billion through direct deposits. That represents a staggering 6.1% more than in 2024, whose total amount refunded with direct deposit was $166.424 billion.

IRS updated the average refund amount

The average refund amount is $3,221 as of March 21, 2025. Again, the IRS has good news for millions of taxpayers because the average refund in 2025 is 4.6 percent higher than in 2024.

In total, the IRS has refunded $179.469 billion in 2025. If the amount refunded with direct deposit is $176.591 billion, the rest will be for those who have not requested direct deposits.

What has drastically dropped is the number of taxpayers who have used the IRS website. Fewer taxpayers have hired a tax professional too. Actually, 40,120,000 taxpayers have chosen a tax professional to file their 2024 tax return.

If you have not filed your 2024 tax return yet, you will have to do so before the April 15, 2025, deadline is over. Some taxpayers who suffered the disastrous consequences of severe weather conditions may qualify for an extension. Contact the Agency if you are unsure whether you qualify or not.
