Having a low income and not being able to make ends meet is awful. Green Card holders may qualify for SSI monthly payments if they meet certain requirements in 2025. Therefore, it could be a financial relief for many individuals or married couples who are eligible.
The Social Security Administration (SSA) claims that “lawfully present noncitizens of the United States who meet all eligibility requirements can qualify for Social Security benefits.” What is more, some non-citizens may be eligible for SSI. For your information, Social Security and Supplemental Security Income requirements differ.
SSI for Green Card Holders
Actually, to qualify for Supplemental Security Income benefit payments as a noncitizen, SSA states that you must be in at least 1 of certain classifications granted by DHS (Department of Homeland Security).
One of them is if you are: “Lawfully admitted for permanent residence.” Thus, if you are a Green Card holder, you are in a qualified alien category which allows you to get SSI if you meet the other conditions.
Social Security retirement benefits require applicants to have paid enough payroll taxes. Currently, you must have worked for at least 10 years and you must have earned 40 work credits at 62 to get retirement benefits. Check SSA rules before you move outside the USA while you are receiving any of these payments.
What if you are not a Green Card holder?
If you are not a Green Card holder, you may also qualify for Supplemental Security Income if you are in one of the following situations:
- Admitted as a Ukrainian humanitarian parolee.
- Admitted as an Afghan humanitarian parolee or Afghan Non-Special Immigrant Parolee.
- Admitted as an Afghan or Iraqi Special Immigrant.
- Admitted as an Amerasian Immigrant.
- A Cuban or Haitian Entrant.
- An alien whose removal is being withheld.
- Granted asylum.
- Admitted as a refugee.
- Paroled into the United States.
- Granted conditional entry.
Check your eligibility for any Federal or Social Security payment once you obtain your Green Card. In this way, you will get financial support to make ends meet.
