Social Security resumes payment collections

The Agency has just made an important announcement. Actually, it is the immediate resumption of debt collection activities. Social Security has been doing a lot of changes in order to make SSA more efficient.

For your information, these debt collection activities will be done through TOP. TOP stands for the Treasury Offset Program. It will be for debts accrued prior to March 2020.

Why has Social Security made this decision?

This decision has been made after the suspension of deb collections because of the economic challenges related to the pandemic. What is more, this program will collect delinquent debts owed to state and Federal agencies.

So, this program will intercept state and Federal payments. This debt collection started in 1992 as it is mandated by law. It is good to know that this program successfully collected almost 2 billion dollars in unrecoverable delinquent debt through TOP.

Therefore, this debt collection program is essential for keeping the integrity of the OASDI and Supplemental Security Income program in the United States, claims Social Security.

DOGE update related to Social Security

The fact that Social Security resumes the debt collection program is not the only change. DOGE (the Department of Government Efficiency) has detected that about 40% of SSA direct deposit fraud deals with changes through phone calls.

Hence, Social Security will only allow recipients of benefits to change their bank account direct deposit information in person or online. If you would like to correct the record of your direct deposit info online using a 2-factor authentication.

Despite the fact that Social Security clients may have heard about changes in phone services, there is no need to worry. All other phone services will remain unchanged said DOGE.

Going back to the debt collection program, keep in mind that the Department of Treasury has started collecting debts SSA referred to Treasury before March 2020. In total, there are about 280,000 individuals who may be impacted by this measure with a collective debt balance worth 2.7 billion dollars.
