Generally, Medicaid offers low-cost or free medical benefits to eligible Americans in the United States. So far, to take advantage of this program, Americans must meet certain requirements.

As a matter of fact, only adults with a low income, seniors aged 65 or older, pregnant women, people with a disability, and children can qualify for this benefit in the USA. It is important you apply for Medicaid in the State where you are currently living.

Medicaid: Financial  eligibility

On the one hand, all applicants must meet income requirements. Or else, they will not qualify for this joint federal and state program. According to the U.S. Government’s official website, the Affordable Care Act set a new way for determining income eligible for this benefit.

This income requirements are based on the Modified Adjusted Gross Income (MAGI). Not only will MAGI be used for Medicaid, but also for CHIP (Children’s Health Insurance Program).

Bear in mind that certain Medicaid eligibility groups do not need a determination of income by the Agency. For example, your coverage will be based on being a recipient of a program like SSI (Supplemental Security Income).

Medicaid and non-financial eligibility

Apart from financial requirements, Medicaid applicants must meet non-financial conditions. In general, they must be either United States citizens or qualified non-citizens.

Take for example, lawful permanent residents. What is more, you must be a resident of the State where you are currently getting Medicaid. Bear in mind that some eligibility groups are limited by age, parenting or pregnancy status.

If you need the support of thie health benefit, you will need to check your eligibility with your State’s agency. Keep in mind that each State has its own requirements. Do so at: https://www.medicaid.gov/about-us/where-can-people-get-help-medicaid-chip/index.html
