The IRS (Internal Revenue Service) reminds United States taxpayers who are working and living abroad about their deadline to file their 2024 tax return. Generally, most taxpayers must pay their tax liability and file before the April 15, 2025, deadline is over. However, if you are living and working abroad, you must file your 2024 tax return by June 16, 2025. So far, the average refund payment is $3,170 as of March 28, 2025.

Actually, the deadline should have been June 15, because taxpayers who are living and working abroad qualify for an automatic extended deadline (see deadline to pay below). So, the IRS has had to push back from the usual June 15 because that date falls on the weekend this year. So, Sunday, June 15 cannot be this year’s deadline and it has been put off one day.

This IRS deadline applies to:

The IRS claims that this deadline applies to both United States citizens and resident aliens abroad. This June 16 deadline applies to those with dual citizenship as well. So, save this date if you are in any of these situations.

Generally, on the regular due date of their Individual Income Tax Return, a United States citizen or resident alien living abroad or who is in the military on duty overseas is permitted a 2-month extension.

Therefore, they will not have to ask the IRS for it and they will be allowed to file by June 16, 2025. Anyway, it is advisable to make the tax payments when required in order to avoid any interest.

IRS Tax Payment Deadline for U.S. Taxpayers Abroad

Even if United States taxpayers who are working and living abroad generally qualify for a tax-filling extension, the deadline to pay any tax due is April 15, 2024. It is very important to pay before the Internal Revenue Service deadline is over to avoid accruing interest.

The current interest rate is 7% per year and the Agency claims that it is compounded daily after the April 15, 2025, deadline. I you are not sure if you qualify or not for the June 16 extension of time (not to pay), check all the requirements now.

A taxpayer qualifies for the June 16 extension if they are:

  • a U.S. citizen or resident alien and, on the regular due date of their return:
    • taxpayers are residing outside the USA & Puerto Rico and their main post of duty or place of business is outside the USA and Puerto Rico, or
    • Taxpayers are in naval or military service on duty outside the United States and Puerto Rico.

The Internal Revenue Service reminds taxpayers that they should attach a statement to the tax return that indicates the situation of the two that apply. Still, a taxpayer residing abroad can request an extension of time to file until mid-October. So, if you get this extension of time, you will have a few more months to file your 2024 tax return, but make sure you pay taxes before April 15, 2025.
