IRS help for taxpayers who need in-person assistance

The best way to sort out doubts and minor issues is to use the IRS online account for individuals. The 2025 Tax Season will be over for most taxpayers on April 15, 2025.

However, there are taxpayers who have not filed their 2024 tax returns. What is more, they have not paid their tax liability to the IRS yet. It is important to do so to avoid penalties or fees. But what if you cannot file because you need face-to-face assistance?

IRS Taxpayer Assistance Centers

If you are in this situation, what you need is a Taxpayer Assistance Center which offers face-to-face assistance. Of course, this is only necessary when you think your tax issue can’t be handled either by phone or online.

Then, you will need to contact your local Internal Revenue Service office. Nevertheless, make sure you find a Taxpayer Assistance Center nearby and call first to make an appointment.

Good news if you need flexible hours because many IRS Taxpayer Assistance Centres offer extended office hours now. The opening hours run from January 21, 2025, through May 1, 2025. Use the Internal Revenue Service locator to find the center that suits you best: https://apps.irs.gov/app/office-locator/

IRS tips to prepare the appointment

Remember to make the appointment as soon as possible. The closer the April 15 deadline is, the more difficult it will be to make an appointment in any of these Tax Assistance Centers.

So, after getting the appointment prepare:

  • Photo ID (issued by the U.S. government). Two original forms of ID.
  • if you have already filed bring a copy of your tax return
  • Bring your ITIN or Social Security Number
  • any tax document you believe will be helpful
  • check eligibility of tax credits and bring documents to proof your eligibility
  • make sure your phone is silenced to avoid interruptions
  • reschedule the appointment if you can’t visit the Internal Revenue Service Tax Center
