The IRS reminds taxpayers who were affected by a disaster and qualified for a time extension to file their 2023 tax return the deadline is February 3, 2025. Therefore, it is essential to file your federal income tax return and pay your taxes if you have not done so yet.

As a matter of fact, there are 14 States that were granted an extension of time. Apart from taxpayers in these States, taxpayers in the United States Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico must also apply before the February 3, 2025 deadline is over.

IRS reminder in 14 States

Taxpayers in Louisiana, Vermont, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, Arizona, Connecticut, Illinois, Kentucky, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, New York, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Texas, and Washington must file by February 3, 2025, 2023 tax returns if they were granted an extension of time due to a disaster declaration.

However, some States may have a longer deadline. The IRS claims that for other States it will be May 1, 2025. This is the case for the whole States of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina.

Parts of Alaska, New Mexico, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia will also have until May 1, 2025, to file a 2023 tax return. For your information, May 1, 2025, will also be the deadline to file their 2024 returns and pay any tax they owe.

How do you know if you qualify for an IRS extension of time?

Keep in mind that the Internal Revenue Service generally provides relief to any area designated by FEMA. FEMA stands for the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

This tax relief includes both, putting off various tax payments and tax filing deadlines. All you have to do is check your address of record is in a disaster-area locality.

If so, individual and business taxpayers are granted extra time automatically, Therefore, you will not need to apply for a time extension if you are in this situation.
