Generally, applicants will receive their Social Security Number card within 14 days. Therefore, it should be in your possession no later than 2 weeks once you have your Permanent Resident Card, also known as “Green Card“.

It is important to highlight that if you are applying for Adjusted Status or Permanent Residence you will need Form I-485. Form I-485 is the Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status. So, if you are using it to get a Green Card, you can also apply for your Social Security Number card.

How can I apply for both my Green Card and my Social Security Number?

According to the Social Security Administration, to get both, a Green Card and an SSN card, you must complete the section on the application (Form I-485) to ask for an SSN card.

Once you complete this section and submit it, the USCIS (U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services) will hand in the Social Security Administration all the necessary information so you can get an SSN card.

Once the SSA receives the data from USCIS, they will process the request so you can get your SSN card. Many citizens wonder if they need to visit an SSA office to get an SSN card though.

Getting a Social Security Number and a Green Card

The Social Security Administration confirms that you will not need to visit an SSA office or contact the Agency to get your SSN card. Therefore, you will just need to complete the section in the Form I-485 once you are applying for your Green Card.

Of course, it will be essential that USCIS approves your application to get a Green Card in order to get an SSA card as well. So, check that USCIS approves your application for LPR status.

LPR stands for Lawful permanent residents. For your information, they are also known as “green card” holders, aliens who are lawfully authorized to live permanently within the United States of America. Keep in mind that your SSN card will be sent by mail to the address you provided USCIS with.
