Are you a Lawful Permanent Resident of 5 years in the United States? Green Card holders who have had this card for 5 years may be eligible for naturalization.

As a matter of fact, the most typical path to United States citizenship through naturalization is to be a Green Card holder for 5 years. So, you have been a lawful permanent resident all this time. In case you do not know what naturalization means, it is the way an alien not born in the U.S. becomes a U.S. citizen voluntarily.

Part 1 – Requirements for Green Card holders

To apply for naturalization, there are a few requirements that Green Card holders must meet. These eligibility requirements will depend on your personal situation. Here is the full list of General Eligibility Requirements:

  • To file Form N-400 (Application for Naturalization), you must be at least 18 years old
  • Prove you have been, for at least 5 years, a lawfully admitted permanent resident of the USA
  • Show continuous residence in the U.S. for a minimum of 5 years right after the date you file Form N-400
  • Demonstrate you have, for at least 30 months, been physically present in the USA. This 30-month period is out of the 5 years right before the date you file Form N-400

  • Take an Oath of Allegiance to the United States of America
  • Be able to read, write, and speak basic English
  • Show an attachment to the principles and ideals of the Constitution of the United States
  • Have both understanding and knowledge of the fundamentals of the principles, form of government, and history of the USA
  • Demonstrate you have lived for a minimum of 3 months in a state or USCIS district having jurisdiction over your place of residence and
  • Show that you are and have been a person of good moral character for a minimum of 5 years before the date you file Form N-400.
