Generally, a disability benefits decision can take between 6 to 8 months. It will depend on the type of disability you have when you apply for SSI (Supplemental Security Income) payments in 2025.

Therefore, it is of vital importance to reduce the time it takes you to apply when your disability starts. By doing so, you will avoid waiting extra time to get SSI payment if you qualify.

SSI & expedited payments

The Supplemental Security Income program receives funds from the Federal government. However, you must apply for these benefits on the Social Security Administration’s website.

SSA arranges paydays for Supplemental Security Income recipients and administers applications too. For your information, Social Security can start SSI payments more quickly in 4 different types of situations.

For example, some applicants of this Federal program may be in an emergency situation. Therefore, you may get expedited payments through the emergency advance payment. Another way to get faster checks is PD (presumptive disability) or PB (presumptive blindness).

SSI: immediate payment and expedited reinstatement cases

The Social Security Administration may be able to make an immediate payment if you meet all the requirements. This could be for new claimants or for those who have already started receiving SSI benefits.

Of course, to get them, you must be facing a financial emergency. What is more, the immediate payment cannot be higher than $999.00. Then, SSA will subtract the immediate payment from the first regular payment which is due to you.

Appealing is not allowed if you do not get approval to get the SSI immediate payment. finally, you could also get these disability benefits faster if you qualify for expedited reinstatement.

For instance, if you have earnings over the limit, Supplemental Security Income benefits will stop. Once you do not exceed the income limit, you could request expedited reinstatement. So, you will not need to fill out a new application.
