Social Security Confirms August Payment Schedule for Retirees and SSDI Recipients—Here’s When Your Check Arrives

When Should You Claim Social Security? The Age You Choose Could Cost You Thousands

The Social Security Administration issues SSI on the first day of each month. When that date falls on a weekend or a federal holiday, the money goes out on the preceding business day instead. August 1, 2026 is a Saturday, so the August benefit is being released early, on Friday, July 31.

Every person currently enrolled in the SSI program. That includes adults 65 and older with limited income and resources, people who are blind, adults with a qualifying disability, and children with a qualifying disability. Nearly 7.5 million recipients nationwide fall into those categories. Beneficiaries who collect both SSI and Social Security retirement or disability benefits will also get the early deposit; their Social Security payment continues to follow the separate birth-date calendar.

After the 2.8% cost-of-living adjustment that took effect at the end of December, the maximum federal benefit rate stands at $994 a month for an eligible individual and $1,491 for an eligible couple. An essential person may receive up to $498. Most recipients take home less than the maximum: the SSA subtracts countable income after applying the $20 general income exclusion and the $65 earned income exclusion. Several states add their own supplement on top of the federal rate, so two people with identical income can receive different totals depending on where they live.

Because the August check arrives in July, there will be no SSI deposit at all during the month of August. Advocates urge recipients on fixed incomes to set aside part of the July 31 payment for August rent, utilities, and groceries. The next regular deposit is scheduled for Tuesday, September 1. The same calendar quirk returns twice more this year: the November benefit will be paid on October 30, and the January 2027 benefit on December 31.

Payments are delivered by direct deposit or Direct Express card. The SSA advises waiting three mailing days before reporting a missing check, then calling 1-800-772-1213.
