Tax refunds approved for thousands in Virginia

If you live in Virginia and are dealing with the holiday rush, I have some good news that might brighten your wallet. It’s October 2025, and Governor Glenn Youngkin recently greenlit one-time tax refunds that sound like a well-deserved break after a year of price hikes and everything in between.

This tax refund program is an extra “bonus” from the state to reward those who pay their state taxes on time and with complete transparency. Basically, Virginia is giving money back to its residents thanks to a surplus in 2024 tax revenue. They call it “one-time tax rebates,” and it’s a way of saying “thank you for contributing to the state.”

Is this tax refund program new to Virginia?

It’s not a completely new program – they’ve already done it in previous years – but this 2025 comes with juicy amounts and a deadline you can’t ignore. To qualify, you need to meet a couple of simple requirements. First, you must have had “state tax liability” in 2024 – that is, you must have paid income taxes in Virginia last year.

Zero liability, meaning if you didn’t owe anything, sorry, you’re not on the list of eligible beneficiaries for this refund. Second, and this is key, you must file your 2024 tax return by November 3, 2025.

If you already sent it before July 1st, you’re among the lucky ones who will receive the money first. If not, hurry up, because after that date, forget it – there are no extensions for this.

No additional application is required; it’s automatic if you comply. Just make sure your address and bank details are up-to-date on your tax return, as this will avoid unnecessary delays.

How much money can you expect? The size of tax refund checks

It depends on how you filed. If you’re single or head of household, you can expect up to $200. If you’re married filing jointly, it goes up to $400. It’s not a fortune, but these days, an extra $200 for gas or Thanksgiving dinner isn’t bad at all.

And be careful: it’s “up to” that amount, so it could vary a little based on your exact situation, but most people get the maximum if they qualify.

The calendar is already moving

  • If you filed before July 1st: The state will send checks or direct deposits starting on October 15 and following in the next weeks, and you should see the money in your account or mailbox by the end of this month (October). Some are already receiving it, according to what I’m reading.
  • If you do it now: They will process it later, but it still arrives between November and December. Not Christmas-like, but close. The entire program is for a few million Virginians, so don’t worry, there’s enough for everyone who applies on time.

How to make sure it arrives without drama

Go to the Virginia Department of Taxation website (tax.virginia.gov) and check the status of your refund using their “Where’s My Refund” tool. If you opted for direct deposit, great—it should arrive in 3-5 business days. If not, your check could take another week or two, especially with the holidays approaching. And a friendly tip: if you changed banks or moved, update your tax account now so you don’t have to chase after a lost envelope.
