More than 50,000 stores in the United States now accept EBT card payments from SNAP benefits through DoorDash. This number didn’t exist three years ago. Now it’s a reality that’s changing how millions of low-income families access food without leaving their homes, without a car, and without needing a delivery.
The most recent expansion came in two stages. On March 31, Family Dollar and DoorDash announced that nearly 7,000 of the chain’s stores, spread across 48 states and the District of Columbia, would begin accepting payments through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, known as SNAP.
A week later, on April 8, it was the turn of Tops Friendly Markets, a regional chain with 151 stores in New York, Pennsylvania, and Vermont. Tops is part of Northeast Grocery Inc., which also operates Market 32 and Price Chopper, totaling nearly 300 supermarkets in six northeastern states.
More places to use your SNAP benefits without leaving your home
Chris Hooks, president and chief commercial officer of Family Dollar, explained it simply: “Our partnership with DoorDash to enable SNAP/EBT payments nationwide is an important step in removing barriers for our customers and expanding how and where we serve them, bringing greater flexibility, convenience, and speed to the shopping experience.”
Ron Ferri, president of Tops Markets, used similar language but pointed to something more concrete: “By expanding access to grocery delivery for SNAP customers, we are helping to ensure that more families can put fresh, healthy food on the table with greater ease and dignity.”

Dignity. The word also appeared in Northeast Grocery’s statement. John Persons, the company’s CEO, noted: “Enabling SNAP/EBT payments through DoorDash is an important step in removing barriers for the families we serve and ensuring that more customers can shop with ease, dignity, and flexibility.”
Three executives, three ads in less than two weeks, and the same word. That’s not marketing. It’s the acknowledgment of something DoorDash’s data has been showing for some time: SNAP recipients aren’t customers who choose delivery for convenience. They are people who, in many cases, have no other option.

Food deserts: SNAP benefits aim to give them nutritious groceries
An internal report from the platform revealed that SNAP users on DoorDash are twice as likely to live in food deserts as users without SNAP. 43% reported using the service because they have difficulty accessing transportation.
Nearly one in four cited health or mobility issues that prevent them from shopping in person. Since DoorDash launched SNAP/EBT payments in 2023, nearly 3 million consumers have activated that option in the app.
The process is simple. The user registers their EBT card in their account settings, fills their cart with eligible items, and the system automatically applies the benefit at checkout. Items not covered by SNAP, such as taxes, fees, and tips, must be paid using another method.
Other retailers that accept SNAP benefits for delivery
The expansion isn’t limited to the chains that made headlines this week. In February 2026, DoorDash added CVS Pharmacy, Dierbergs Markets, Lowe’s Foods, New Seasons Market, Rouses Markets, Wegmans Food Markets, and Weis Markets. ALDI, Dollar General, Safeway, Albertsons, Walgreens, Meijer, and 7-Eleven, among many others, were already part of the network. The map now covers 94% of U.S. households receiving SNAP benefits.
Forty million people depend on this program. It is the largest food assistance system in the country. Benefits are loaded monthly onto electronic cards that, until recently, could only be redeemed in person at participating stores. Online delivery was simply not an option for these families.
