IRS tax refund payments from April 19, possible huge direct deposits if eligible

The IRS continues issuing tax refund payments. Bear in mind that even if the 2025 tax season started in January and many taxpayers got their direct deposits long ago, others have recently filed. Therefore, they need to wait for up to three weeks at least. It will take only 21 days if you filed electronically, you requested a direct deposit instead of a paper check and your 2024 tax return is both accurate and complete.

Still, each bank may have different processing times and the number of taxpayers who have requested direct deposits at the same time may not be the same all the time. So, the IRS recommends taxpayers wait for 5 business days once they see a sent date on their 2024 tax refund status. The best way to track your refund is using the Agency’s “Where’s my refund?” tool.

Taking into account that a tax refund may be available within 21 days of your filing, here are the possible paydays:

  • Returns filed on March 29, 2025: Possible Direct Deposit on April 19
  • Returns filed on March 30, 2025: Possible Direct Deposit on April 20
  • Returns filed on March 31, 2025: Possible Direct Deposit on April 21
  • Returns filed on April 01, 2025: Possible Direct Deposit on April 22
  • Returns filed on April 02, 2025: Possible Direct Deposit on April 23
  • Returns filed on April 03, 2025: Possible Direct Deposit on April 24
  • Returns filed on April 04, 2025: Possible Direct Deposit on April 25
  • Returns filed on April 05, 2025: Possible Direct Deposit on April 26
  • Returns filed on April 06, 2025: Possible Direct Deposit on April 27

The April 15, 2025, deadline is over, however, if you qualified for an extension of time to file and pay due to a natural disaster, you may have extra days. For example, some disaster victims have their 2024 tax return deadline on May 1, 2025. Some disaster victims may have not filed yet. This is because they qualify for an extension of time to file and pay their 2024 taxes. Take for example affected areas in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina, or parts of Alaska, New Mexico, Tennessee, and Virginia.
