The Internal Revenue Service has confirmed that on January 27, 2025, the IRS will start to accept tax returns. Therefore, this will be the beginning of the 2025 tax filing season. The good news is that the Agency has made important improvements to make the life of taxpayers much easier when it comes to filing their 2024 tax return.

Better tools and updated filing options will bring historic improvements to expand across the United States. Although the IRS Free File program had already been opened, the Agency confirms that Direct File will be available from January 27, 2025. If you have followed the Internal Revenue Service advice, you will be able to file today. But when will your tax refund be delivered?

How long should an IRS tax refund take?

The IRS states that it will depend on several factors. For example, it is not the same if you file an electronic tax return or a paper return. Those who request a paper check instead of a direct deposit will need to wait longer.

Here are the possible wait times to get your 2024 tax refund in 2025:

  • your 2024 tax refund can take up to 21 days for an electronically filed return
  • it will take four or more weeks if your tax return is sent by mail
  • amended returns may also take 4 or more weeks
  • tax returns that need correction will take longer than 4 weeks
  • tax returns that need extra review will also last longer than 4 weeks

When can I expect my tax refund from the IRS if I claimed the EITC?

Whether you claimed the Earned Income Tax Credit or the Additional Child Tax Credit, you will have to wait for your tax refund until March 3, 2025. Of course, this will be for those who:

  • choose to get their tax refund by direct deposit
  • file their tax return online
  • their tax returns need no correction or revision

The IRS recommends checking the Status of your tax refund to see when it will be issued. The Where’s My Refund tool will be helpful to find out more about the time it may take to be in your bank account. Do so by February 22, 2025. Some may even see their refund a few days earlier.
