The Social Security Administration (SSA) will implement a change in its benefit distribution procedure starting September 30, 2025. This change, which includes SSDI disability payments, permanently eliminates the issuance of physical checks.
The provision stems from an executive order from the Department of the Treasury, following an order from President Donald Trump stipulating that all federal transactions must be conducted digitally.
The initiative, called “Modernizing Payments To and From America’s Bank Account,” aims to modernize systems, increase security levels, and reduce operating costs for the federal government, with projected savings of $750 million each year.
There will only be electronic payments for SSDI benefits
It is estimated that around 500,000 individuals continue to receive their funds via paper documents. After the specified date, those beneficiaries who have not updated their contact information and method of receipt will see their deposits temporarily suspended.
The interruption does not permanently cancel the right to collect SSDI, but it may cause significant delays in receiving financial resources until the situation is regularized. The SSA urges users to select an electronic option, either direct deposit into a personal bank account or using the Direct Express prepaid debit card.

Updating your information must be done before the established deadline, which is September 30th, to avoid any setbacks. The process can be completed through the My Social Security online portal, accessible at www.ssa.gov, or by calling 1-800-772-1213.
Failure to do so will result in an immediate interruption of payments, potentially affecting the financial stability of individuals, particularly those whose livelihoods depend entirely on these funds to cover essentials such as housing, medical services, and food.
SSDI disbursement schedule for September
Meanwhile, SSDI payments continue as normal. In fact, after the September 30th deadline, payments will continue as usual, with no changes or anything unusual, but only electronically.
- September 3, 2025: Payment for beneficiaries who take home both SSDI and SSI, or those who began receiving SSDI before May 1997.
- September 10, 2025: Payment for beneficiaries with birthdays between the 1st and 10th of any month who began SSDI after May 1997.
- September 17, 2025: Payment for beneficiaries with birthdays between the 11th and 20th of any month who began SSDI after May 1997.
- September 24, 2025: Payment for beneficiaries with birthdays between the 21st and 31st of any month who initially received SSDI after May 1997.
Updated SSDI maximum and average amounts
According to recent SSA data, the maximum amount was set at $4,018, effective through December 2025, while the average is a number that varies monthly, depending on the amount beneficiaries receive and the number of people receiving payments.
The average is $1,542, an amount that could increase as the year draws to a close, and it becomes clear whether inflation will be higher than the previous year.
