IRS tax refunds: Thousands of Americans still getting checks in September 2025

SNAP Benefits Arrive in New York: Schedule, Payments and More to Know

The Social Security Administration has released the official calendar for October 2025 payments, providing clarity for millions of Americans who rely on these monthly deposits. The schedule, which only shifts when a payment date falls on a weekend or federal holiday, ensures beneficiaries know exactly when to expect their funds.

In September, payments were slightly adjusted due to Labor Day. The Supplemental Security Income (SSI) deposit, originally scheduled for September 1, was issued earlier on August 29. Since then, SSA has followed its standard distribution protocol, releasing payments based on the beneficiary’s date of birth.

The October payout schedule begins without interruptions:

  • Wednesday, October 1: SSI beneficiaries receive their monthly payment.
  • Friday, October 3: Payments go out to those who began receiving benefits before May 1997, as well as individuals who receive both Social Security and SSI, regardless of their birthdate.
  • Wednesday, October 8: Payments for beneficiaries born between the 1st and 10th of any month.
  • Wednesday, October 15: Payments for those born between the 11th and 20th.
  • Wednesday, October 22: Payments for those born between the 21st and 31st.

This timetable ensures every group of beneficiaries receives their funds on time, with no holiday-related disruptions in October.

Key Changes Beneficiaries Should Know

Beyond the payment dates, SSA has confirmed a major regulatory change: beginning September 30, 2025, paper checks will be fully phased out. From that point forward, all federal payments — including Social Security — must be received electronically, either through direct deposit or an authorized debit card.

Additionally, beneficiaries with outstanding debts due to overpayments may see their monthly deposits reduced. Under current policy, SSA is authorized to withhold up to 50% of benefits until the balance is recovered. This means some individuals could receive significantly less than the national average payment.

While the average retirement benefit in August 2025 stood at $1,999.97, the exact amount each person receives depends on their earnings history and type of benefit. For those with outstanding obligations, the actual payment may be lower.

With a clear schedule in place and significant updates to how payments are delivered, October will mark a pivotal month for Social Security recipients across the country.
