There are still two Social Security payment dates left in August, in case you haven’t received your money yet.
Two important dates for Social Security retirement benefits remain on the August 2025 calendar. According to the Social Security Administration’s (SSA) standard schedule, payments for the third and fourth Wednesdays of the month are pending distribution.

The payment for the second Wednesday, August 13, has already been processed. The payment structure depends on the beneficiary’s date of birth.

Wednesday, August 20, is scheduled for people born between the 11th and 20th of any month. Funds will be deposited directly into registered bank accounts that same morning, or checks will arrive by mail around that date. Wednesday, August 27, covers beneficiaries born between the 21st and 31st of the month, following the same automatic distribution procedure.

A heads-up on other Social Security payments

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments for low-income seniors and individuals with disabilities went out on August 1st. Because September 1st lands on Labor Day weekend, the next SSI payment (normally for September) will actually arrive early, on Friday, August 29. This shift ensures recipients get their funds on time.

While the SSA hasn’t reported widespread issues for August 2025, occasional delays can happen due to bank processing or outdated contact info. Remember, all payments this month include the 2.5% Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) that started in January 2025 and will be valid up to December 2025.

What about benefit amounts in 2025?

Your specific Social Security retirement check depends on your earnings history, when you started claiming benefits, and the SSA’s calculation formula. For 2025, key figures reflect wage growth and inflation:

  • At age 62 (earliest): Up to $2,837/month
  • At Full Retirement Age (FRA – typically 67): Up to $4,018/month
  • At age 70 (maximum): Up to $5,108/month

Getting the maximum $5,108 requires earning at least the taxable maximum ($176,100 in 2025) for 35 years and waiting until age 70 to claim. This top amount is 2.5% higher than 2024 thanks to the COLA.

For most people, the average is lower:

  • The estimated average monthly benefit for retired workers is $1,976 in 2025 (up about $49 from 2024).
  • For couples both receiving benefits, the average is $3,089/month.
  • State averages vary, with Connecticut highest at $2,114 and Mississippi lowest at $1,638.

Social Security’s at risk of defunding

The latest 2025 Trustees Report brings sobering news: the long-term financial outlook for Social Security has slightly worsened. The trust fund supporting retirement and survivor benefits (OASI) is now projected to run out by 2035.

If Congress doesn’t act before then, current law would force an automatic 21% cut to everyone’s benefits. That would hit millions of retirees and survivors hard.

Lawmakers are weighing options like increasing the payroll tax rate, raising the Full Retirement Age (FRA), and expanding the taxable wage base (taxing more income, potentially including higher earners).

Similar fixes, including tax hikes and FRA adjustments, were made back in 1983 to keep the system solvent. Without decisive action soon, the future stability of Social Security remains a major worry for beneficiaries.
