The Texas SNAP benefits EBT card

The Texas SNAP benefits EBT card

If you’re a Texan looking for help putting food on the table, you’re not alone. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, known to most as SNAP, is a key resource. Here in Texas, benefits are delivered on a Lone Star Card, which works like a debit card at the grocery store.

Figuring out the Texas payment schedule, how much you might get, and how to apply can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. Let’s walk through the basics together and learn everything you need to know about SNAP benefits.

What’s the SNAP EBT Lone Star Card in Texas

Your SNAP benefits are deposited onto your Lone Star Card over a span of several days each month. You don’t get to pick your date; it’s determined by the last digit of your case number. The state generally issues payments from the first to the twenty-eighth of the month.

For example, looking ahead to the week of September 9th, 2025, the schedule is set up like this:

  • If your case number ends with a 5, your benefits will be available on Tuesday, September 9th.
  • If it ends with a 6, expect them on Thursday, September 11th.
  • A case number ending in 7 means your deposit will hit on Friday, September 12th.
  • Finally, if your number ends in the number 8, your benefits will be ready to use on Saturday, September 13th.

How Are SNAP Benefit Amounts Calculated?

The amount of assistance a household receives isn’t the same for everyone. It’s a personalized calculation based on your specific situation. The state looks at three main things: how many people live in your home, your total monthly income, and your necessary monthly expenses, like rent and utilities.

The government sets maximum benefit amounts to guide the process. For the period running from October 2024 to September 2025, the highest possible amounts are as follows:

  • 1 person: $291
  • 2 people: $535
  • 3 people: $766
  • 4 people: $973
  • 5 people: $1,155
  • 6 people: $1,386
  • 7 people: $1,532
  • 8 people: $1,751
  • For each extra person: add $219

It’s important to remember that most families receive less than the maximum, as the calculation is designed to supplement what you are already able to put toward groceries.

How Can You Apply for SNAP in TX?

Texas offers a few different paths to apply for SNAP benefits, which is helpful for people with different levels of internet access or comfort with technology.

The simplest way for many is to apply online through the Your Texas Benefits website. You can do it from the comfort of your home at any time. If you’d rather talk to someone in person, you can visit a local Texas Health and Human Services (HHS) office.

The staff there can provide paper forms and help you fill them out. For those who prefer the phone, calling 2-1-1 is a great option. After choosing your language, select Option 2 to have a paper application mailed directly to you.

Eligibility boils down to a few key areas:

The Financial Side: Your household’s gross income generally needs to be at or below 130% of the federal poverty level. They also look at your assets, or countable resources.

For most homes, things like cash and money in checking or savings accounts cannot add up to more than $3,000. This limit is raised to $4,500 if someone in the household is 60 or older or has a disability.

Work Requirements: Here’s the tricky part for some recipients. Most adults between the ages of 16 and 59 must meet work requirements to stay eligible. This means they cannot voluntarily quit a job and must be actively looking for work or participating in a state-approved employment training program.

Who is Included: You’ll need to provide Social Security numbers and information for everyone in your home who buys and prepares food together. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or have a specific, qualified immigration status. When you apply, be ready to share details about everyone’s income, any vehicles you own, and your monthly bills, as these all factor into the final decision.
