The Social Security Administration (SSA) can also pay benefits to widow(er)s. Therefore, the monthly payments are not just for retirees or disability insurance recipients. A family member can receive survivor benefits on the deceased worker’s record. So, you could get payments as a spouse or as a child.

As of December 2024, the average Social Security payment for young widow(er)s is $1,316.11. The are differences between different ages. For example, those aged 20 & under receive $1,060.10 on average. However, the average payment for widow(er)s aged 50 is $1,439.12.

Social Security payment dates for widow(er)s

The Agency has confirmed the upcoming payments for Social Security recipients. April will bring three more payments. Thus, if you did not get the monthly payment on April 3, 2025, your direct deposit will be issued on April 9, 16 and 23.

In order to receive the direct deposit or check on April 9, you must have been born from the 1st to the 10th. The month you were born is not relevant as long as you filed and got SSA’s approval.

April 16 will be the payday for recipients who were born after the 10th but before the 21st. So, is your birth date from 11-20? Then, your payment will be available on the 16th.

Social Security payment amounts in April

So far, the only amounts that have been described are for widow(er)s. If their average payment is $1,316.11, they receive less money than what an average retirement benefit is worth.

Retirees get an average payment worth $1,980. Therefore, there is a big difference between these 2 amounts. SSDI recipients get about $1,580 on average. So, it is also higher for disability recipients.

However, if it is compared to the average amount for survivor widowed mothers and fathers, it is very similar. The average Social Security payment for widowed mothers and fathers is $1,304 as of February 2024. Is your monthly payment too low? Apply for SSI and SNAP benefits to boost your finances.
