How Much From Social Security You’ll Get In May: Average Payments to Forecast

The U.S. Government, through the Social Security Administration (SSA), confirms the next RSDI and SSI payments. While the first one is for retirees, survivors, or disability insurance recipients, the second, SSI is for low-income Americans who meet additional requirements. Payment amounts are also different because SSI is a supplement for Americans who do not have enough earnings.

The SSI payment, for seniors aged 65 or older, people with a disability (qualifying medical condition), or people who are blind, were deposited on April 1, 2025. Therefore, there will not be a new Supplemental Security Income payment until May 1, 2025. Besides, the May schedule also includes the SSI for June on May 30, 2025.

RSDI payments in early April

Some RSDI (Retirement, Survivor & Disability Insurance) recipients qualified for the first payment in April for this group. For example, some beneficiaries qualify because they got their first Social Security payment before May 1997. That was about 28 years ago, so you must have been for a really long time on benefits to qualify in this way. Their payday was April 3 so they will not get a new one until May 2.

Others qualify because they are receiving both RSDI and SSI. For these two groups of eligible recipients, their last payday was April 3, 2025. Thus, they will not receive their next monthly payment until May 2 in the United States.

The average RSDI payment is worth about $1,839. However, it will depend on your work history and other factors whether you receive this amount or a completely different one. If you are not sure of the average amount for each beneficiary, here they are:

Old-Age and Survivors Insurance: 1,894.67
Retirement benefits: 1,931.20
Retired workers:1,980.86
Spouses of retired workers: 932.06
Children of retired workers: 919.42
Survivor benefits: 1,547.26
Children of deceased workers: 1,136.27
Widowed mothers and fathers: 1,304.62
Nondisabled widow(er)s:1,837.16
Disabled widow(er)s: 951.67
Parents of deceased workers: 1,687.22
Disability Insurance: 1,439.42
Disabled workers: 1,580.76
Spouses of disabled workers: 433.23
Children of disabled workers: 510.60

RSDI payment on Wednesdays

The Social Security Administration has confirmed that RSDI payments will also be delivered from the second through the fourth Wednesday in April 2025. In general, these Wednesday payments do not change unless the payday falls on a Federal holiday.

  • Wednesday, April 9: RSDI payment if you were born from the 1st to the 10th
  • Wednesday, April 16: payment if you were born from the 11th to the 20th
  • Wednesday, April 23: payment if you were born from the 21st to the 31st

By now, you must be wondering about the specific average payments by group. For instance, if you are planning to file for retirement benefits, the average payment amount for this group is $1,980 as of February 2025.

SSDI recipients receive about $1,580 on average. Therefore, there is a considerable difference if you qualify for retirement or disability insurance. This is because a disability prevents may workers from getting a higher payment since they cannot continue paying taxes to SSA. Finally, the average payment for survivors is $1,547.
