The IRS reminds taxpayers in the U.S. of the April deadline to claim refunds

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has made an important reminder. Most people who work in the United States must file a 2024 tax return. Therefore, it is important to determine whether you should file or not.

Bear in mind that some taxpayers are not required by the IRS to file. However, they may be eligible for a tax credit even if they have no obligation to file their 2024 tax return.

IRS deadline to file

The Agency started accepting tax returns on January 27, 2025, and will continue accepting them until April 15, 2025. If you believe you will not have time to file your 2024 tax return before April 15, pay your taxes now and apply for an extension of time.

Those who get an extension of time to file must pay the taxes before April 15, 2025, or they will have to face a penalty or fee from the Internal Revenue Service. To avoid this, pay the amount of money you owe the IRS and file your tax return before October 15, 2025, if you got an extension of time.

Do not worry if you are not able to file because you have never done it before. Make an appointment and visit an IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center before time runs out. Remember that if you cannot pay in full your taxes you may qualify for a payment plan online. So, apply for one if you need to.

IRS helps you determine if you must file

The Internal Revenue Service insists that most United States citizens or even permanent residents who work in the USA have to file a 2024 tax return before April 15, 2025. In general, you will need to file if:

  • you have $400 in net earnings from self-employment (side jobs or any other independent work)
  • your income is over the filing requirement
  • you had any other situation that requires you to file

Remember that the IRS may send you a tax refund if you file if you qualify for a tax credit which is refundable. Yes, this is possible even if you do not need to file your 2024 tax return.
