Millions of Taxpayers May Recover COVID-Era Penalties and Interest From the IRS

The IRS (Internal Revenue Service) has already issued more than 29,615,000 tax refunds in the United States. On average, tax refunds are worth $3,453, which is about 7.5% higher than in 2024. Those who qualify for an EITC or ACTC could not receive the first refunds deposited in 2025.

In many cases, eligible taxpayers of the EITC or the ACTC have not received their tax refunds until March 3, 2025. However, some taxpayers may have received their money a few days earlier. Refunds with these tax credits are so late because, by law, the IRS can’t issue EITC or ACTC refunds before mid-February. Therefore, it prevents you from getting the full refund before that date.

IRS payment schedule for EITC & ACTC recipients

Generally, tax refunds take about 21 days to be processed and sent. Following that IRS schedule, this is when you could receive your money. For your information, this is just illustrative, so it may take longer if the Agency needs to review something wrong or inaccurate in your 2024 tax refund.

IRS & the “Where’s my refund?” tool

The easiest and fastest way to track your 2024 tax refund is to use the Internal Revenue Service tax refund tool. It is known as “Where’s my refund?” and it will allow you to know if your money is on its way or not.

Those who need to contact the IRS will have this information on the “Where’s my refund?” tool. Therefore, it is something you can check every morning until you get your tax refund.

The Agency usually updates the information 1 per day and overnight. Thus, there is no point in checking the “Where’s my refund?” tool 4 times per day because it will only be updated once.
