IRS phone numbers for the 2025 tax season

The IRS phone number you will need if you are an individual is 800-829-1040. Bear in mind that you must call between 7 a.m to 7 p.m (local time). During the filing season, wait times can range between 3 or more minutes. It will depend on the phone lines you need to contact to. It will also depend on the moment and day you call.

For example, if you call on Mondays or Tuesdays, during Presidents Day weekend, or close to the April 15 deadline, wait times are expected to be much higher. So, avoid these days to save time and avoid delays in your tax return filing.

IRS phone number if you are NOT an individual

Currently, the IRS phone number for businesses is 800-829-4933. The operating hours for this phone number are also from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. local time. Tax professional have a different phone line.

Tax professionals must call the IRS at 866-860-4259. Bear in mind that this phone number is only for those tax professional who have valid third-party authorization. In fact, it is known as the Practitioner Priority Service. They also share the same operating hours (7 a.m. to 7 p.m. local time).

If you need to call because of a non-profit tax-related issue, the phone number the IRS has provided is 877-829-5500. Watch out because operating hours are not the same as for other services. They are from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. local time.

IRS phone numbers for Estate and gift taxes

For any questions related to Estate or gift taxes, you must call 866-699-4083. Operating hours are also different from other taxpayers. For your information, you can call from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Eastern time.

A completely different phone number is available for Excise taxes. The IRS will be happy to help you if you call at 866-699-4096. ​​​​​Make sure you call from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. (Eastern time).

People who are deaf or hard of hearing can make use of the TTY/TDD 800-829-4059 phone number. Some people may be abroad during the 2025 tax season, thus, they will need to contact the overseas phone line.
