For Georgia taxpayers expecting their 2025 surplus tax refund, the Georgia Department of Revenue has begun its payment process, and millions of payments have already gone out successfully, while a big portion is still pending to be disbursed.

This refund is a product of the state’s large budget surplus and gives a one-time payment to those who are eligible to get it, with the amount changing a lot based on how you file your taxes. Let’s take note that the federal refunds, disbursed by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), has already been disbursed and there’s no more this year.

Georgia Surplus Tax Refunds: Latest on Payments

People who file as single filers and those who are married but file separately can get a refund of $250. Heads of household can get a bigger amount of $375. Married people who file a joint return can get $500. It is important for part-year or non-residents to know that their refund will probably be calculated based on how much taxable income they had in the state of Georgia.

Also, while this is not taxable income for the state of Georgia, it could be a taxable item on your federal income tax return, if you itemized deduction items on your taxes last year. The process of giving out these funds is a long, slow process so that mistakes are avoided, and it does not break down the system.

The state is doing it in a planned weekly process that means that people will not get all their money at the same time. The first round of giving out payments started in June and is almost over.

State officials say that they have given out over $1 billion in 3 million refunds, which is about 98% of all the payments for this first round. If you have already filed your 2024 return, and you have not yet received your money, then it is very likely that it is in a line waiting to be paid out in the next batches before the first round of payments is over.

There will be a second round of giving out payments later this year to those who filed for an extension. If you asked for an extension on your 2024 return, you have until October 15, 2025, to file your papers. The state will start giving out the surplus tax refunds for this group soon after that, and they will start going out in October 2025.

You can check whether you are eligible and check your own payment by using a tool on the Georgia Department of Revenue’s website. To get this service, you will need your SSN or ITIN and your AGI from your 2023 Georgia tax return, which is on Line 16 of Form 500 or on Line 4 of Form 500EZ.

How to Track your Georgia Tax Refund

There are a few reasons why your refund could take longer than it should. If the online portal says that your refund should have been paid, but you still have not got it, then the delay could be because of an offset. This means that your refund has been taken to pay a debt that is owed to the state, like unpaid state taxes or unpaid child support.

It could also be because of the way the process of giving out payments works, which means that some people will get paid later than others even if they are in the same group of people who are getting money. It could also be because of the little mistakes that you might have made in giving your information on the portal.

When the money finally comes in your bank account through a direct deposit, it will have the name “GASTTAXRFD” on your bank statement, which is a short form for Georgia State Tax Refund. It is not related to any other gas tax refund. It is also important for taxpayers to know that they will probably get a Form 1099-G in the beginning of 2026.

This form will have the total of the surplus tax refund that you received, and you will need it to report it on your tax return when you pay your taxes in 2026. Check your refund’s status in this official website.
