The IRS Has a Crisis And Your Refund Might Be Caught in the Middle

Millions of retired Americans rely on Social Security benefits to cover essential expenses each month and the final payment for May 2025 is almost here. The Social Security Administration (SSA) will send this check on Wednesday, May 28, targeting a specific group of recipients based on their birth dates and retirement status.

If you’re part of this group, knowing exactly when your payment is scheduled can help you plan ahead. With rising costs in housing, food, and healthcare, many seniors depend heavily on these benefits to maintain their financial independence. That’s why it’s crucial to know not just how much you’ll receive but also when it’s coming.

May 28 Social Security Payment: Who Will Get It?

This upcoming payment is intended for retirees whose birthdays fall between the 21st and 31st of any month, as long as they started collecting their benefits after May 1997. These individuals are considered part of Group 4 in the SSA’s structured monthly payment schedule.

Social Security divides payments into four groups to better manage the distribution process. Each group receives their check on a different Wednesday throughout the month. If you’re in Group 4, your scheduled payday is Wednesday, May 28, 2025.

The fastest way to receive this payment is through Direct Deposit. This method ensures that your money is transferred electronically and is available to you on the same day it’s issued. If you still receive physical checks or have not enrolled in Direct Deposit, your payment may take up to three additional business days to arrive.

New Payment Details
Payment Date Wednesday, May 28, 2025
Eligible Birthdays Born between the 21st and 31st of any month
Start of Benefits Must have started receiving Social Security after May 1997
What About the June SSI Payment?

In addition to the May retirement benefit payment, recipients of Supplemental Security Income (SSI) will also receive their June 2025 payment on Friday, May 30. This early delivery happens because June 1 falls on a weekend, and the SSA does not issue payments on Saturdays or Sundays.
