Social Security has recently made an important announcement. Its aim is to correct the record about SSA Office Closing in the United States. No doubt this issue worries many Americans.
The Agency would like to inform SSA users, recipients, or applicants that recent reports in the media that the SSA is permanently closing local field offices are false.
Social Security’s statement
Since January 1, 2025, the Administration has not permanently closed any local field office. What is more, SSA has not announced these permanent closures either.
For your information, the Social Security Administration must temporarily close a local field office. However, it is done for reasons like damage, facility issues, severe weather conditions and so on.
Once these issues are sorted out, the SSA reopens these local field offices. Therefore, it is important to check the SSA updates to see if there has been a temporary closure or not.
Has the Social Security Administration announced any permanent closures?
As a matter of fact, the Administration has claimed that there has been 1 permanent closure of 1 hearing office. This hearing office is located in White Plains, New York.
Do not worry because the Social Security Administration always works closely with local congressional delegations. SSA always does so before closing any office permanently.
What is more, the Social Security Administration reassigns employees from an affected office. In this way, SSA can continue offering the local community in-person services.
The Agency is committed to giving service wherever users need help and support. Hence, SSA local field offices are no exception stated the Acting Commissioner of Social Security Lee Dudek.
Lee Dudek also added that they “have not permanently closed any local field offices this year.” SSA has only closed small hearing rooms with no assigned employees. Keep in mind that most hearings take place virtually.
