The Social Security Administration (SSA) distributes monthly payments according to a fixed schedule based on two variables: the type of benefit each person receives and the beneficiary’s date of birth.
April 2026 is no exception, because the Social Security payment schedule will be distributed throughout the month on five different dates, with amounts that reflect the adjustment for cost of living (COLA) of the 2.8% applied since January of this year.
April 2026 Social Security Payment Schedule: The List of Deposits
The first deposit of the month arrives on April 1st and corresponds exclusively to the beneficiaries of the program SSI (Supplemental Security Income), which assists older adults, the blind, and people with disabilities who have limited income and resources.
Two days later, the April 3 deposit applies to those who began receiving benefits before May 1997, as well as those who simultaneously receive SSI and other payments due to Social Security retirement or disability.
From then on, the calendar is organized exclusively by date of birth. Those born between the 1st and the 10th of any month receive their deposit on April 8. Those born between the 11th and the 20th receive it on April 15, and those born between the 21st and 31st, on April 22. This scheme is permanent and is replicated every month of the year, except when a payment date coincides with a federal holiday, a situation that does not occur in April 2026.
The SSA States: No Payment Delays or Advances This Month
Unlike months in which a payday Wednesday falls on a holiday—forcing the SSA to advance the deposit to the previous business day—in April 2026 there are no federal holidays that disrupt the regular schedule. The five scheduled payments fall on their exact dates: April 1, 3, 8, 15, and 22, all Wednesdays or business days without institutional interference.
This detail has practical relevance for beneficiaries who plan their monthly expenses based on the arrival of funds. The SSA deposits directly into bank accounts or credits to Direct Express cards, according to the payment method registered by each account holder. It is not possible to request a different date outside of the official calendar.
Beneficiaries who do not yet have direct deposit set up and receive physical checks should consider additional postal transit times, which may extend the effective availability of funds several days beyond the dates indicated on the calendar.
What Amounts Are Paid in April by the SSA?
The 2.8% COLA, effective since January 2026, was calculated based on the variation in the Consumer Price Index for Urban Workers (known as CPI-W) between the third quarter of 2024 and the same period in 2025. In absolute terms, that percentage translated into an average increase of around $56 monthly for retirees, with respect to what they received in 2025.
The average retirement benefit registered in February 2026 was $2,076.41 monthly, according to the SSA’s Monthly Snapshot. This average includes beneficiaries with very different tax histories: from those who contributed the minimum required to those who contributed for decades above the taxable limit.
The maximum possible amounts in 2026 vary depending on the age at which the beneficiary began receiving benefits. Those who retired at 62 years old—the minimum age allowed—can receive up to $2,969 monthly.
Those who waited until the full retirement age, which depending on the year of birth ranges between 66 and 67 years, have access to a maximum of $4,152 per month. And those who postponed payment until 70 years—the age from which late payment credits stop accruing—can reach up to $5,181 monthly.
The SSI program moves under different logic than retirement. It is not a contributory benefit: it does not depend on work history or contributions made during one’s working life. Its amount is determined by Congress and also adjusted by the annual COLA. In 2026, the maximum federal SSI payment is $967 monthly for individuals and $1,450 for couples in which both members qualify.
