The Social Security Administration (SSA) has an official time schedule for the release of the benefit payments in the month of September 2025. The date depends on the recipient’s birthday or their status within the program. The official calendar for the ninth month of the year will follow.
On Wednesday, September 3, deposits will be made for persons that started receiving disability (SSDI) benefits before May 1997. Those who receive SSDI and SSI at the same time will get their funds that day. This is to make the payments for two different programs run at the same time.
More SSDI payments to come in September 2025
The list continues on Wednesday, September 10. That is the date for those with a birthday between the 1st and 10th of any month. A week later, on Wednesday, September 17, it is for those born between the 11th and 20th. The last group in the list is set for Wednesday, September 24. This is for those born between the 21st and the 31st.
The amount of the benefit is made on an individual basis based on the worker’s history of Social Security. It is not the same for everyone, but the SSA has provided benchmark figures for 2025 after a COLA of 2.5%. The average amount of SSDI paid each month to a person in the program is about $1,540. The lowest possible payment is about $967 a month.
However, this can be much less if the previous pay was very small. The most that could be paid is $4,018. That is for those who made a lot of money in their career. The way it is figured out is from the formula that the SSA uses to find the average indexed monthly earnings (AIME).
It is a bit complicated, but it uses what are called bend points: 90% is used for the first $1,226 of AIME, 32% for the amount between $1,226 and then $7,391 and 15% for anything over that.
The number comes from that. This total becomes the main insurance benefit. SSDI eligibility requirements The basic requirements are very tight as to the medical and work side of things. The work credit requirement is usually 40 credits. 20 of those are earned in the last 10 years before the disability started. Younger workers will need less.
What’s a disability, according to the SSA
The definition of the SSA of disability says that the medical problem has to keep the person from doing a substantial gainful activity (SGA). This has to last for 12 months, or it has to be terminal. The medical issue has to be in the list of issues on the SSA list called the Blue Book or prove to be as bad as the ones on the list. The limit of income from work is important.
In 2025, the level of work that will not qualify the person will be $1,620 a month for those who are not blind and $2,700 for those who are blind or legally blind.
If the person works at a level that exceeds that limit, the benefit could be affected. There is also a period of five months after the start of the disability that the person will not be paid but will be eligible.
The last thing: change to a way of getting paid by electronic means soon
As of September 30, 2025, the SSA has made a rule that no one will get their benefits by a paper check any longer. The rule requires that everyone must change to electronic payments for all federal benefit payments. This can be paid by direct deposit into a personal bank account or a Direct Express debit card.
The reason is to cut costs of running the program, to cut fraud and theft, and to have people get their money faster. Those who are still getting their money by check need to contact the SSA now to get their information changed so they do not have an interruption in the flow of their benefits.
