Your New York Inflation Refund Could Arrive This Week

The State of New York has thrown a breath of fresh air at its residents: what are now known as inflation refunds, stimulus checks that promise to soften the blow of skyrocketing prices in recent years. If you’re lucky enough and meet the conditions, you’ll find real money from the state government in your mailbox.

It sounds almost too good to be true, doesn’t it? Well, it’s real, and if you filed your taxes last year, you could be one of the lucky ones. Governor Kathy Hochul announced it with great fanfare a few months ago: more than 8 million New Yorkers will qualify for these payments, inspired by the state’s budget surplus and the desire to combat the ever-rising cost of living.

Millions of inflation refund stimulus checks are on their way to homes

Since late September, checks have been flying through the mail—or landing directly in bank accounts, if you opted for direct deposit. And right now, in the middle of October, most people are receiving theirs. If you live in the Big Apple or somewhere upstate, check your inbox; it could be your turn.

But not all checks are the same. The amount depends on how you filed your taxes in 2023—single, married, head of household—and how much you earned that year. The Department of Taxation and Finance (DTF) has designed a simple scheme to keep things simple. Check this table to find out which of these checks you qualify for (and if you qualify):

Filing Status NY Adjusted Gross Income (2023) Refund Amount
Single $75,000 or less $200
Single More than $75,000, up to $150,000 $150
Married Filing Jointly $150,000 or less $400
Married Filing Jointly More than $150,000, up to $300,000 $300
Married Filing Separately $75,000 or less $200
Married Filing Separately More than $75,000, up to $150,000 $150
Head of Household $75,000 or less $200
Head of Household More than $75,000, up to $150,000 $150
Qualifying Surviving Spouse $150,000 or less $400
Qualifying Surviving Spouse More than $150,000, up to $300,000 $300

If your New York adjusted gross income (line 33 on your IT-201 form) falls within these ranges, and you weren’t considered a dependent on someone else’s return, you’re eligible. Singles with modest incomes get $200; couples who file jointly and earn up to $150,000, double that. It’s a modest gesture, yes, but in times when a cup of coffee costs what lunch did a decade ago, every dollar counts.

Now, the timing of inflation refund checks delivery

Mailings aren’t strictly ordered by zip code or neighborhood—that would be a logistical mess. They began in late September and are being extended for weeks, with the goal of having the vast majority arrive before Halloween.

As of today, October 19, more than 2.1 million checks have been delivered. If you haven’t seen yours, don’t panic; the DTF says all outstanding checks will arrive no later than March 2026. To check the status, go to the NY tax website or call the department—it’s better to be safe than sorry. The total amount of households that are expected to be benefited could be as much as 8 million.
