Millions of American taxpayers are looking forward to receiving their 2024 tax refund during the 2025 Tax Season. The IRS usually deposits refunds within 21 days, but you must meet several conditions.

Bear in mind that to receive a fast tax refund, the IRS will need you to file electronically. Filing your 2024 tax return electronically will not be enough because you must also request a direct deposit. Paper checks will take much longer so you should avoid this payment method. Last but not least, your return must be accurate and complete.

How long can your refund take once sent by the IRS?

Some taxpayers may worry because they have not received the IRS refund once they see a sent date. This can be seen on the online tool “Where’s my refund?”, which is free and online.

The IRS reminds taxpayers to wait for 5 days to check with their financial institution or bank about their refund payment. So, there is no need to worry if you have not received it immediately.

Keep in mind that not all banks and financial institutions have the same processing times. If your bank issues the refund payments quickly, this is when you could get your money.

IRS possible payment schedule in April

This is just informational and tax refund payments may take longer for several reasons:

  • 2024 tax returns filed on March 15: The agency may issue a refund on April 5
  • 2024 tax returns filed on March 16: The agency may issue a refund on April 6
  • 2024 tax returns filed on March 17: The agency may issue a refund on April 7
  • 2024 tax returns filed on March 18: The agency may issue a refund on April 8
  • 2024 tax returns filed on March 19: The agency may issue a refund on April 9
  • 2024 tax returns filed on March 20: The agency may issue a refund on April 10
  • 2024 tax returns filed on March 21: The agency may issue a refund on April 11
  • 2024 tax returns filed on March 22: The agency may issue a refund on April 12

Remember that the IRS will only accept payments and filings until April 15, 2025. That will be the deadline for payments and filing. If you need an extension of time, get it before April 15, 2025. Make sure you pay before that date though.
