Generally, most citizens who work in the United States must file a 2024 tax return, says the IRS. However, it is possible that you have no obligation to file during the 2025 tax season because you had really low earnings.

Therefore, you must be wondering if you could take advantage of any tax credit the IRS offers in 2025. The Agency claims that even if you make less than the income that is required to file a 2024 tax return, you may get some money back from the Internal Revenue Service.

Who should file a 2024 tax return? IRS explains it

Those taxpayers who are not sure whether they should file a tax return or not should know this. The IRS offers an online interview to determine whether you should file or not.

What is more, it will provide you with the information related to the tax credits you may be eligible for, if any. These tax credits may help you receive a tax refund which will definitely boost your finances.

The estimated time to complete this online interview is 12 minutes. So, in less than 15 minutes you will know whether you should file or not and if you can get a refund. Take the interview at: https://www.irs.gov/help/ita/do-i-need-to-file-a-tax-return.

Information you will need to give the IRS

During the online interview, the Internal Revenue Service will ask you about:

  • your filing status
  • basic information to help you find out what your gross income is
  • your Federal income tax withheld

For your information, this online interview was designed for taxpayers who were either resident aliens or United States citizens for the whole year, for example for 2024.

Take into account that if you are married, your spouse must have been a United States citizen or a resident alien for the whole year as well. If you are in a different group, you should have a look at the information related to International taxpayers.

IRS warns taxpayers that this interview is just based on the information you provide, you make sure it is correct. If you need help, you can always hire a professional.
