Social Security announces 2 major changes to 2025 payments

As 2025 approaches, more than 70 million Americans are preparing to receive their Social Security payments through the Social Security Administration (SSA). This vital program provides financial support to retired workers, survivors, individuals with disabilities, and beneficiaries of the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program, designed to assist seniors and low-income individuals with disabilities.

The SSA has announced changes to some payment dates in 2025, particularly affecting SSI beneficiaries. Understanding these schedule variations is crucial to effectively managing your monthly income and avoiding unexpected delays.

About 2025 social security payments

The SSA issues five types of payments every month, depending on the type of benefit and specific program requirements. Here is an overview of the payment schedule:

SSI beneficiaries:

  • Payments are made on the first day of the month, regardless of the recipient’s birth date.

RSDI beneficiaries (retired workers, survivors, and people with disabilities):

  • For claims made before May 1997: Payments are issued on the 3rd day of each month.
  • For claims made after May 1997: Payments are scheduled based on the beneficiary’s birth date:
      • Second Wednesday: Beneficiaries born between the 1st and 10th.
      • Third Wednesday: Beneficiaries born between the 11th and 20th.
      • Fourth Wednesday: Beneficiaries born between the 21st and the end of the month.

Holiday or weekend adjustments:

  • If a payment date falls on a weekend or holiday, the SSA reschedules the payment to the previous business day, ensuring beneficiaries receive their payments on time.

2025 social security calendar for january and february

The SSA has officially released the payment schedule for January and February 2025, reflecting a 2.5% cost of living adjustment (COLA) announced on October 10. Here are the confirmed dates:

January 2025 payment dates

  • January 3: RSDI beneficiaries with claims before May 1997.
  • January 8: RSDI beneficiaries born between the 1st and 10th with claims after May 1997.
  • January 15: RSDI beneficiaries born between the 11th and 20th with claims after May 1997.
  • January 22: RSDI beneficiaries born between the 21st and 31st with claims after May 1997.
  • January 31: SSI beneficiaries (all receive payments regardless of birth date).

February 2025 payment dates

  • February 3: RSDI beneficiaries with claims before May 1997.
  • February 12: RSDI beneficiaries born between the 1st and 10th with claims after May 1997.
