On average, SSDI recipients will get about $38 dollars extra from Social Security once the 2025 COLA increase becomes real. The Agency will start delivering Disability Insurance payments on January 3, 2025. However, only 2 groups of disability benefit recipients are eligible. That implies that 3 other groups will have to wait longer for their check or direct deposit.

According the to 2025 payment schedule for Social Security, Disability Insurance payments will also be due on January 8, 15, and 22, 2025. Therefore, those who receive their payment on January 22 will be the last ones to enjoy the 2.5% COLA increase.

Who qualifies for the last SSDI payment from Social Security in January?

If you were born from the 21st to the 31st, it is more than likely that you qualify for a Social Security Disability Insurance payment on January 22. If your birth date falls on these days, you will not get your payment on the 22nd but on the 3rd if:

  • you are an SSDI and SSI (Supplemental Security Income) recipient
  • you began collecting checks or direct deposits for SSDI before May 1997

Therefore, all eligible recipients of the SSDI payment on January 22, 2025, will get the COLA increase over 3 weeks later than Supplemental Security Income recipients who will get their COLA boost on December 31, 2024.

How much will my SSDI benefit increase after COLA?

This will depend on the amount of your monthly payment. For example, if your payment is worth $100, you will get $2.5 extra. That means you get 2.5 dollars for each 100 dollars you receive from SSA in 2024.

Hence, if your disability payment is worth $2,000 in 2024, you will get $2,050 in 2025. That will be 600 dollars extra in a whole year with the 12 payments. Recipients with an SSDI check worth $1,000 will get $25 extra per month.

As you can see, the lower your payment, the less money you get extra per month. Do not forget about applying for SSI if your Social Security Disability Insurance payment is too low.
