SSI Recipients Get a Holiday Boost: COLA Increase Hits Wallets First Than Others

Social Security 2026 COLA Confirmed: These Are the New Maximum Benefits After the 2.8% Increase

Millions of Americans have already collected their Social Security payment in the United States. However, a big group of retirees is still waiting to get the last check in 2024. For your information, this money will not be yours if you started receiving retirement benefits before May 1997 or if you are an SSI recipient currently.

What is more, you will not receive this Social Security payment if you were born either from the 1st to the 10th or from the 11th to the 20th. Here are the eligibility requirements to get the last direct deposit or check from SSA.

Eligibility for Social Security on December 24

If you are receiving Social Security on December 24 is because:

  • you filed at 62 or later,
  • you were born between 21-31 regardless of the month,
  • you began collecting monthly payments after April 30, 1997
  • you are not getting SSI at the same time
  • you remain eligible and have not broken SSA rules

After this payment on the 24, there will be an SSI payment on December 31, 2024. It will be the January check issued in advance. Then, all the January payments will bring the COLA for retirees. The January paydays will be on the 8th, 15th and 22nd.

Who will receive $1,927 on December 24 from Social Security?

Only retirees who, by chance, qualify for this average amount will get $1,927. This is the amount Social Security estimates retirees get on average before the 2025 COLA increase comes.

If you were a low-earner and worked for about 10 years, you may qualify for a much lower-than-average payment. High-earners who filed at 70, worked for 35 years and got the taxable maximum all this time in jobs that paid SSA taxes can get up to $4,873 in 2024.

The largest benefit payments at Full Retirement Age will be $3,822 on December 24. If you filed at 62, $2,710 will be the maximum amount at this age.
