Those taxpayers who have had to file an amended tax return can have a look at its status about 3 weeks after filing it. Therefore, you will not be able to check it as fast as the first time you filed your 2024 tax return claims the IRS. Amended tax returns are necessary when taxpayers make a mistake

Nevertheless, processing for your Form 1040-X can take up to 8 weeks in the best-case scenario. Sometimes it could take between 12 and 16 weeks. For your information, the “Where’s My Amended Return” tool will provide you with details about the current tax year return status. But also those up to 3 previous years.

IRS requires these 3 things to check amended returns

The Internal Revenue Service says you will need a Social Security Number, a Zip Code and your birth date to check an amended return you have already submitted.

Bear in mind that the “Where’s My Amended Return” is available 24 hours a day but there are some exceptions. For example, on Mondays, from 12-3 a.m. Eastern time, it is not available.

Occasionally, on Sundays from 1-7 a.m., the system for amended tax returns is not available either. Unfortunately, the IRS “Where’s My Amended Return” is not available for all sorts of amended returns.

IRS doesn’t allow to check these amended returns

Although many American taxpayers can take advantage of the Where’s My Amended Return? tool, others cannot get the status of their amended return on it. Here are the returns that this tool can’t give you the status for:

  • “Returns processed by special units such as Bankruptcy or Examination”
  • “Injured spouse claims”
  • “Carryback applications and claims”
  • “Returns with a foreign address”
  • “Business returns“
  • “Form 1040 marked as an amended or corrected return (instead of 1040-X)”

Often, taxpayers can read the “contact us” status. So, you should call the IRS to see what the Agency wants you to do next. Not sure if you should file an amended return? Visit the IRS official website at: https://www.irs.gov/help/ita/should-i-file-an-amended-return
