IRS Free File Advantages in 2025

The main advantages Free File offers are the following ones:

  • Qualified taxpayers can obtain free tax preparation
  • Free electronic filing is available
  • Getting a free direct deposit is possible if eligible for a refund
  • Guided tax preparation software online

Bear in mind that IRS Free File may not be available to all American taxpayers. As a matter of fact, there is an income threshold. It will only be for individuals and families with a 2024 total adjusted gross income of up to $84,000 or less. AGI includes tips, business income, wages, retirement income or any other taxable income. SSI benefits are not taxable.

IRS Free File Is Beneficial for Taxpayers

This tool will be essential to avoid making mistakes when you are calculating valuable tax credits. It will also help you find other tax credits you may be eligible for like the Child Tax Credit or the Earned Income Tax Credit.

The good thing is that IRS Free File can deal with complex tax returns in the United States. Therefore, you could save money if you do not need to hire a tax professional.

Free File is also a secure tool, so there is no need to worry about your personal information. Needless to say, many taxpayers love it because they can use it in their smartphone, laptop, or tablet. So it is pretty comfortable! English and Spanish can be used too!
