Social Security average payments in retirement are $1,978. However, this is the average amount, as of January 2025, for retired workers. For your information, not just retired workers can receive monthly payments from the Administration.

As a matter of fact, spouses of retired workers can sometimes qualify for Social Security. Of course, they must meet several requirements to get this monthly check or direct deposit.

Eligibility for a Social Security payment

Spouses of retired workers who collect benefits on their record can get $931 on average in February. To receive a spousal benefit payment on February 26, your birth date must fall after the 20th.

Thus, if you are a spouse of a retired worker on Social Security and you were born from the 21st to the 31st, you will get your payment on the 26th. Those on SSI and retirement benefits qualify for the March 3 payment though.

If you also have qualifying children, they can get about $919.02 on average. Obviously, they must also meet all the requirements to get money from Social Securiy in 2025.

Requirements to get Social Security spousal benefits

If you are not eligible for the spousal benefit payments in February because you have never filed for Social Security, check your eligibility. Keep in mind that $931 is just an average amount.

Some spousal benefits will be higher but others will be lower. Thus, if your spouse works and is about to file for retirement benefits, you must be at least 62 years old to get benefits.

Those spouses who are not 62 yet can receive Social Security spousal benefits if they have a qualifying child. A qualifying child must be on disability benefits or under 16. Good news because spousal benefits can be as much as half of the worker’s primary insurance amount.
