Generally, SNAP<\/strong> recipient cannot buy a hot meal<\/strong> using their Food Stamps<\/strong> on their EBT cards. However, there is an interesting program that could allow some eligible recipients to do so. It is the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Restaurant Meals Program (RMP).<\/strong> As a matter of fact, it is a State option to allow some recipients who cannot cook to buy ready-to-eat hot meals.<\/p>\n

There could be several reasons why a SNAP<\/strong> recipient may not be able to cook. Sometimes a beneficiary may have a disability that prevents them from cooking, or may be too old, or they may not have a place to store or cook food. Bear in mind that some Food Stamp<\/strong> recipients may not have a permanent residence because they are currently experiencing homelessness.<\/p>\n

SNAP benefits to buy hot meals<\/h2>\n

Thanks to the SNAP Restaurant Meals Program<\/strong>, some eligible recipients can buy prepared meals at authorized restaurants with their Food Stamps<\/strong>. By now, you must be wondering which eligible recipients qualify for the RMP.<\/p>\n

In the first place, you must be certified Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program<\/strong> in a State that has joined the Restaurant Meals Program. Secondly, all members of the household must be either:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • a senior aged 60 years old at least<\/li>\n
  • homeless<\/li>\n
  • a spouse of a SNAP<\/strong> recipient who is eligible for the Restaurant Meals Program<\/strong><\/li>\n
  • a person with a disability receiving SSDI payments, disability retirement benefits because recipients have a permanent disability<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    If you own a restaurant and you live in a State that offers the RMP, you may want to join it. The requirements to offer this benefit is to be in a State that has RMP, to get approval from the state and provide a signed agreement to the Food and Nutrition Service and to be authorized by FNS to accept Food Stamps.<\/p>\n

    Which States offer the SNAP RMP?<\/h2>\n

    According to the USDA<\/strong> (United States Department of Agriculture), there are only 9 States<\/strong> that have joined the SNAP Restaurant Meals Program. Therefore, there are many others who do not offer this possibility. Authorized States:<\/p>\n

      \n
    • Arizona<\/li>\n
    • California<\/li>\n
    • Illinois<\/li>\n
    • Maryland<\/li>\n
    • Massachusetts<\/li>\n
    • Michigan<\/li>\n
    • New York<\/li>\n
    • Rhode Island<\/li>\n
    • Virginia<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Remember that if you are not an eligible SNAP<\/strong> recipients of the Restaurant Meals Program<\/strong>, you will not be able to buy hot meals and the only things you could buy are:<\/p>\n

        \n
      • Vegetables<\/li>\n
      • fruits<\/li>\n
      • fish<\/li>\n
      • poultry<\/li>\n
      • meat<\/li>\n
      • cereals<\/li>\n
      • breads<\/li>\n
      • dairy products like milk, yogurt, cheese<\/li>\n
      • snacks<\/li>\n
      • non-alcoholic beverages<\/li>\n
      • plants to grow and eat the produce<\/li>\n
      • seeds with the same purpose as above<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        On the contrary, there is a list of things SNAP<\/strong> recipients cannot buy<\/strong> using Food Stamps:<\/p>\n

          \n
        • any drinks containing alcohol<\/li>\n
        • medicines<\/li>\n
        • vitamins<\/li>\n
        • supplements<\/li>\n
        • pet foods<\/li>\n
        • cosmetics<\/li>\n
        • hygiene items<\/li>\n
        • cosmetics<\/li>\n
        • paper products<\/li>\n
        • household and cleaning supplies<\/li>\n
        • *foods that are hot at the point of sale unless you qualify for the RMP<\/li>\n
