If you\u2019re one of those people who\u2019s already forgotten their physical wallet twice this week, California\u2019s mobile driver\u2019s license program<\/strong> just got a little more useful. On April 28, 2026, Governor Gavin Newsom<\/strong> announced that the state\u2019s DMV pilot program is now expanding to Samsung Wallet<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

That means if you\u2019ve got a Samsung Galaxy phone<\/strong> and you\u2019ve been watching iPhone users casually flash their digital ID at airport security, it\u2019s finally your turn.<\/p>\n

California\u2019s Mobile Driver\u2019s License: Wasn\u2019t This Already a Thing?<\/h2>\n

Kind of. California\u2019s mobile driver\u2019s license (mDL)<\/strong> pilot has been running since 2023. Before this week, you could already add your license to Apple Wallet, Google Wallet<\/strong>, or the DMV\u2019s own standalone app. Now Samsung Wallet joins the party<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The numbers so far? About 1.7 million active mobile licenses<\/strong> are out there. Roughly 900,000 of those live in the DMV\u2019s own wallet, and overall more than 3.5 million Californians have signed up to use one of the approved platforms. So it\u2019s not tiny, but it\u2019s also not everywhere yet.<\/p>\n

How Do You Actually Add It to Samsung Wallet?<\/h2>\n

The process isn\u2019t rocket science, but you\u2019ll need a few things: a valid physical California license or ID<\/strong>, a Samsung account, a phone running Android 12 or newer, and the Samsung Wallet app installed<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

  1. Open the Samsung Wallet app.<\/li>\n
  2. Select ‘Digital IDs’<\/li>\n
  3. Tap the ‘Driver License\/State ID’ icon to scan the front and back of your driver’s license or state ID.<\/li>\n
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions for face scan verification.<\/li>\n
  5. Select ‘Submit’ and authenticate by fingerprint or PIN.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

    Why Would Anyone Want This Over the Plastic Card?<\/h2>\n

    Privacy, mostly. With the physical card, you hand it over and someone sees everything \u2013 your full address, your exact birthdate, the whole deal<\/strong>. With the mobile version, you can choose what to share. Need to buy beer? You can just prove you\u2019re over 21 without showing where you live. That\u2019s a legit upgrade.\u00a0Steve Gordon, the DMV director, said it\u2019s about \u201cboth convenience and privacy.\u201d And yeah, that checks out.<\/p>\n

    This is where you need to pump the brakes a little. You can use the mobile license at TSA checkpoints<\/strong> \u2013 but only at\u00a0select\u00a0airports for now, with more locations supposedly coming over time.<\/p>\n

    You can also use it at some participating convenience stores and for certain online government services, like logging into MyDMV<\/strong> without a password or handling enrollment and financial aid stuff at California community colleges.<\/p>\n

    But here\u2019s the catch that matters: law enforcement isn\u2019t accepting it yet. Neither are most state agencies or businesses. So don\u2019t get cute and leave your physical license at home. You still have to carry the real thing.<\/p>\n

    And if you\u2019re planning to fly domestically? You\u2019ll need a REAL ID anyway. The mobile version doesn\u2019t replace that requirement.<\/p>\n

    Any Other Fine Print?<\/h2>\n

    Oh yeah. The pilot program is only active until June 30, 2026, and it\u2019s capped at 15% of all DMV license holders. So not everyone can join even if they want to.<\/p>\n

    Security-wise, it\u2019s about what you\u2019d expect: fingerprint or PIN to open it, encryption for your personal info, and Samsung Knox doing its thing in the background.<\/p>\n

    What About the Rest of the Country?<\/h2>\n

    California isn\u2019t exactly first to the party here. Arizona, Colorado, and Georgia<\/strong> already support digital licenses across Apple, Google, and Samsung wallets. California is just catching up \u2013 but with its size, that\u2019s a big deal.<\/p>\n

    Governor Newsom said the usual politician thing about technology not stopping and California<\/strong> not stopping either. Transportation Secretary Toks Omishakin was a bit more down to earth: expanding to Samsung Wallet means \u201cmore people can verify their identity securely using the technology they trust every day.\u201d<\/p>\n

    Look, it\u2019s not perfect. It\u2019s limited. And you absolutely still need your physical card. But for the growing number of people already living out of their phones, having another option to store your ID doesn\u2019t hurt.\u00a0Just don\u2019t toss your leather wallet yet.
